Petco/Petsmart and Nutro are like white on rice! They like to sell the additional to the public!
Nutritionally, they are about the same. The only way you’d get a manifest result by switching from Science Diet is to switch to a food with no corn, no meat by-products (meaning the mark says turkey, not turkey meal, ect.) and that had a high-protein/low stout ratio.
If you’re seriously looking for better food, try consulting your vet about Innova, Wellness, Blue Bison, or AvoDerm. Your licensed vet is the best person to inquiry when it comes to something that would affect your dog’s health, but you do need to do some research on each food before you go in. Some vets get kick-backs and discounts for selling a certain type of food, so that’s what they sell. I’ve worked at 4 uncommon hospitals/clinics and each one sells a uncommon brand and claims that it’s the best. None of them are what I feed my dogs.
Whit your dog being part Boxer, you should also look into foods that been related to a condition called gastric dilatation volvulus (commonly known as bloat or colic). It is a major health concern for larger breed dogs with deep chests.

Just trying to make a sale. Science Diet is certainly a crappy quality dog food, but Nature’s Recipe isn’t excellent any. The only decent quality dog food Petsmart sells is Blue Buffalo.
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly pleased to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human employment (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthful? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the largest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some brilliant dog foods being made these days that contain organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human employment.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Diversity Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more pricey, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.
Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ small nutritional training during their schooling. Above and beyond that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A fantastic option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now place out grainless formulas. Some excellent grainless diets contain: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Diversity Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Inheritance, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be establish in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the brilliant grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Peak, and Halo.
If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.
Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells excellent foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an brilliant place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the ancient over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
Days 1 & 2: 75% ancient food, 25% new food
Days 3 & 4: 50% ancient food, 50% new food
Days 5 & 6: 25% ancient food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% ancient food, 100% new food
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the quick lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times based on the feeding instructions on your dog’s food.

Immortal: I agree with you on the better foods, but vets are not the place to go. They have an incentive to not tell the truth.
Petco and petsmart a businesses first and foremost. Doesnt matter what they sell, they make a sale, they get money.
Look for blue buffalo at petsmart.
If you have a petco around you, you may be able to find wellness, solid gold, castor and pollux, and dick van pattens.

Every company, including shelters and vet offices promote certain foods especially if sales have been down or the food company is funding their business. There are horrible brands of dog food out there such as Pedigree, but, it is not advisable to constantly change a dog or cat’s food. This leads to stomach upsets and sensitivity as well as making a picky eater. There are ways to find a excellent food for your dog by knowing the breed’s background. Does your dog take more after the boxer or the beagle? What is the dog’s medical history? What is the dog’s activity level, age? etc.
All dogs and cats are susceptible to food allergies at some point in life from the following ingredients: chicken, beef, wheat, soy, by-products (ingredients not fit for human employment) among others. Basically, when comparing brands, compare the ingredients. Any ingredient listed before the stout content such poultry stout or chicken stout, are the main ingredients in the food and every ingredient, additive and preservative listed thereafter are insignificant in comparison. If the food does not give the dog diahrrea, second allergies or the need to vomit then the food is safe for your dog to eat. But, as I’ve stated, keep the ingredients list in mind. Stay away from foods that contain by-products. Also, every company manufactures their food differently while spraying stout on the food which gives it that greasy feel. If an animal can’t smell its food they won’t eat it. Some companies cook their food at lower temperatures for a longer amount of time to preserve flavor without cancelling out needed nutrients and to save on adding more stout to the food.
If your dog has been eating science diet and is responsibility fine, don’t switch the food unless you find a better ingredient list or if he’s developed complications.

Natures Recipe is a excellent dog food. It is a 3 star food. I would research the dog foods. Google Dog Food Analysis it will tell you how many stars each dog food receives. I better food is Solid Gold it gets 4 stars and would be better for a large dog because there is more quality ingredients and more meat it is close in price.

Well, they are right about Science Diet not being excellent dog food. In fact, it’s terrible dog food.
I have done lots of research on dog foods and have just recently altered to Natures Diversity Instinct. I’m not sure if that is the same thing they sold you. Whatever you point out, get one that is grain free and you will have a very excellent quality dog food.
I really don’t reckon the employees at Petsmart get anything for selling a particular food so they were probably just tryiong to give you excellent advise.

I feed my dog Nature’s Recipe the same food and she doesn’t have any more digestive tribulations like gas. I can’t afford anything more then this so I certainly know! Excellent Luck with your new dog!

I have a pet dog. Its breed is called AZKAL. I gave her rice and beef steak as part of her daily diet. I named her Batoytoy.
